DESCRIPTION:A Time for Burning\nA Time for Burning is a 1966 American documentary film that explores the attempts of the minister of Augustana Lutheran Church in Omaha\, Nebraska\, to persuade his all-white congregation to reach out to “Negro” Lutherans in the city’s north side. The film was directed by Bill Jersey and was nominated for Best Documentary Feature in the 1967 Academy Awards. The film was commissioned by Lutheran Film Associates (LFA). \nThe film was remastered by the Academy Film Archive and premiered at the Oscars Museum in Los Angeles on December 17\, 2023. \nThe film is shot in “cinéma vérité” style. It chronicles the relationship between the minister\, L. William Youngdahl\, and white and black Lutheran parishioners. The film includes a meeting between Youngdahl and a black barber\, Ernie Chambers\, who tells Youngdahl that his Jesus is “contaminated.” At one point another Omaha Lutheran minister\, Walter E. Rowoldt of Luther Memorial Lutheran Church\, says\, “This one lady said to me\, ‘pastor’\, she said\, ‘I want them to have everything I have\, I want God to bless them as much as he blesses me\, but’\, she says\, ‘pastor\, I just can’t be in the same room with them\, it just bothers me’.” Rowoldt and other ministers also discuss the concern that blacks moving into white neighborhoods will decrease property values. \nThe attempt to reach out does not succeed and Youngdahl resigns as minister of the church. \nIn 2005\, A Time for Burning was selected for preservation in the United States National Film Registry by the Library of Congress as “culturally\, historically\, or aesthetically significant”. \nChambers completed law school and was elected to the Nebraska Legislature in 1970. Senator Chambers is the longest-serving state senator in Nebraska history. \n________________________________________________________________________________\nThe Evangelical Lutheran Church in America (ELCA) is one of the largest Christian denominations in the United States\, with nearly 3.5 million members in more than 9\,100 worshiping communities across the 50 states and in the Caribbean region. Known as the church of “God’s work. Our hands\,” the ELCA emphasizes the saving grace of God through faith in Jesus Christ\, unity among Christians and service in the world. The ELCA’s roots are in the writings of the German church reformer Martin Luther. \nFor more information\, please visit http://ELCA.org \nView More

SUMMARY:Cost of Poverty Experience (COPE)
DESCRIPTION:More than 40% of U.S. households struggle to afford essential needs\, pushing them to make difficult decisions and take significant risks every day.\nThe Cost of Poverty Experience is a 2.5 hour simulation that explores the lived experience of poverty firsthand through the eyes of real families. The experiential nature of this training helps organizations and communities more deeply understand the human and systemic impacts of poverty.  \nFor years\, many top down or well-intentioned approaches to poverty have left out the wisdom and leadership of those closest to the challenges. Created with the input of individuals with personal experience in poverty\, COPE sheds light on these challenges and catalyzes meaningful dialogue and action. This experience challenges participants to rethink poverty\, respond effectively\, and partner with those affected for change.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nCOPE is a tool that will help us: \n\nDeepen our understanding of the lived realities and human impact of poverty in the United States.\nImprove practices and approaches to better engage and partner with people navigating poverty. \nWork more effectively with others in your community to foster opportunities and environments where all people can thrive.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nThink Tank\, Inc. “The Cost of Poverty Experience (COPE).” ThinkTank. Accessed August 31\, 2024. https://thinktank-inc.org/cope.\n\nA light lunch will be provided\, followed by a facilitated action-planning session to apply what we learn.
